I believe everything in the world has a living consciousness that wishes expression. I’ve always been interested in the things we choose not to use anymore, which end up forgotten. Sometimes they are so precious that we keep them aside, waiting for a special occasion that never comes. Or they might be so ordinary that we are never really aware of their presence. In my work with upcycling, I teach people how the walk of their clothes somehow mirrors the walk of their lives. These constant reflections about the history kept in clothes taught me how to actively listen to everything that is put aside without use, and help these objects to express once more their potential in the world. My job is to listen to their stories and give them a new existence. This listening takes the shape of an intuitive process guided by the line and by repeated gestures, as in meditation. The silent mind opens space for me to listen to what the object has to tell me, and what the following steps should be. The “whispering” object chooses to be inspiration, theme, or support. It chooses whether it will be drawn by pencil, sewn, weaved, cut, or glued. It tells me how far to go, and which colours or textures to use. I operate just as a channel that allows this object to become something else, beyond its previous existence. The line is the moving element that opens and clears new ways and assessments to bring this object-memory into conscious interaction with viewers. I thank them for choosing me, by giving them a second life beyond their original meanings. It is irrelevant whether they were preciously kept for generations or regarded as vulgar and banal.
