Uncool Artist

How our model works

What we are

Uncool Artist is a flexible IRL and online space established in New York City in 2018. We support contemporary artists through critique, advisory, production, and visibility. The residency lives online as our core container. Uncool Gallery expands presentation and dialogue. Membership sustains community, rhythm, and shared learning.

Principles

Collaboration and mutual care guide every step. We understand artistic labor and build with artists. We value consideration and respect in all interactions. The relationship is shared practice rather than a client and server transaction. Everyone contributes, including financially, so each artist can develop a solid path and long bonds.

Containers

UAR Online Residency

  • Critique cadence: weekly small-group sessions focused on current work and language.

  • Residents have one 1 to 1 included per four week cycle.

  • Schedules: all dates and deliverables live in the cohort document.

  • Make up: timing changes receive a make up within the same cycle.

Membership

  • Core rhythm: scheduled community sessions, focused salons, and resource shares that support steady practice.

  • Support: no 1 to 1 is included. We remain available in good faith through office hours, message replies, and targeted prompts. Members can request advisory as an add on when offered.

  • Schedules: the membership calendar sits on the member page and updates each cycle.

Visibility

Critique and community review feed selection for public presentation. Selected works enter collaborative posts, features, and exhibitions with timelines and asset checklists shared in writing. The aim is coherence between work, language, and context, and a path that grows across cycles.

Conduct

We keep a kind, professional environment. Feedback flows during critiques, salons, and requested 1 to 1s. Operational questions come in writing to the team so responses stay timely and traceable. Shared resources follow posted guidelines to protect safety and production quality.

Money and access

Fees sustain the people, time, and tools that hold this structure. Artists keep proceeds, starting at 75 percent, depending on where the sale occurs. Sales on site follow New York sales tax rules. Coordinate with us in advance for collection and remittance.

Beyond one program

Uncool Artist holds a field that includes the online residency, membership, and Uncool Gallery. Together they create a continuous cycle of research, production, discourse, and public presentation. Relationships begin in a cohort or in membership and often grow through seasons of shared work.
