Color is Gesture

Color is Gesture was envisioned as a performance between two elements: a resurrected past represented by the masks and an ultra-abstract unknown represented by the velvet paintings. An ancestral-futuristic dance with the unfolding of history.

Unlike part one, which was meticulously choreographed, Part Two became, unexpectedly an unpredictable happening. The performance offered no sense of continuity as I frequently interrupted the performance to talk with the dancers. Intervening mostly to show them the photographs just captured and therefore understand together how to progress on the becoming-of-images.

As a surprise result, the Cave Paintings were shifted from the stage giving rise to a more intricate relation between the masks and their bodies. The characters started to be entwined, at other times crawling or exuding a raw expressiveness.

Just as I had to let go of my convictions about the relevance of the velvet paintings to the scene, the dancers had to unlearn their choreographed movements.

Part two became an exploration of the unfamiliar a dance with the unknown in itself.

Through an interaction with “not knowing what, nor how,” the performance gradually reached its peak of expression.

“Color is Gesture” was the second part of a project by artist Sofia Borges that took place during her occupation of the Uncool Gallery before the space’s official opening. With the collaboration of other artists, her performance was held at the gallery to close the project “Rhapsody of Effacement: A Cave Dance“. Learn more about this project on the artist’s website.
