SÃO PAULO

I'm not led, I lead, 2022.

Acrylic on canvas

Alix Spell affirms, in her work, the need to imagine and design a world from a feminist perspective. For her, the relations between the genders, guided by inequality and based on the perpetuation of patriarchy, produce violence in the social, political, and spatial spheres. In this project, the artist appropriates and re-signifies the writings of the coat of arms of the city of São Paulo – which reads “Non ducor, duco,” that is, “I am not led, I lead,” the artist now proposes: “I am not led, lead” in the feminine. In front of the viewer, you can see, pixelated, portraits of the 54 mayors of the city of São Paulo from the republican period and, among this mass in black and white, only two colored pixels stand out, representing the two women who have already been at the forefront of city management. In recent years, we have witnessed a significant advance in the debates on gender inequality, and women have managed to conquer greater and greater spaces in politics through a lot of struggle. However, after so many years of urban planning and management conducted by men, we live and reproduce, daily, a city that is opposed to women and still awaiting structural change. Alix encourages us to think: how to build spaces – physical and abstract – in which gender inequality is not a structuring mark?
