Tratando de recordar, 2022

Oil on canvas covered with tarp
82 x 60 in

Joaquin Stacey-Calle deals directly with nostalgia, the fragility of memory, and how incredibly fastly time passes. In his work, he builds different narratives by recontextualizing images of his personal and family history to question and push what identity means. He explores the attachment to objects—especially physical photographs, which leads him to cover, erase, and destroy parts of the painting, sometimes the entire work. In Tratando de Recordar the viewer is invited to get extremely close to the painting displayed underneath a plastic tarp. This operation causes the person to see the work differently than if seen uncovered, forcing the viewer to get intimate with the artwork. This intimacy, however, comes only from a relationship with fragments and not with the entire scene portrayed in the painting. In memory, similar to the gesture of seeing only pieces of this painting, we can never capture the whole picture.
